Attack on Wordpress – “http://www.indesignstudioinfo.com/ls.php”

Some of my blogs have suffered the “http://www . indesignstudioinfo . com / ls.php” attack.
What this attack did to my blogs was to add base64 encripted code to one or more .php files on my host.

After searching for a few hours, I found out that this encripted code adds a redirect to some trojan infected websites.

More findings:

It seems that GoDaddy hosted sites have experienced this attack more often than others.
Not only Wordpress installations have this problem but also other .php based websites – Joomla sites were also reported as infected.

The solution to “http : // www . indesignstudioinfo . com / ls . php” Wordpress attack was very easy… after finding it.

I think that Sucuri, the developer of the clean-up script deserves at least a link, so here it is:

A few weeks ago I have changed my Adsense currency from USD to EURO and had a lot of problems with the first EURO payment received through Western Union.
After being rejected 2 times at the Western Union cashing point, I began searching for an answer.
Here it is:
After changing the currency from USD to EURO the sender also changed from Google INC to Google Ireland and of course the sender’s country is now Ireland.
So, be careful!

How to integrate your Twitter tweets in your Wordpress theme

I have been doing a lot of searching for a way to integrate Twitter tweets in my themes without the help of any plugin. If you are reading this, I suppose you are looking for the same thing. Here it is how:

Step 1. Where ever you want your tweets listed (sidebar.php, single.php, footer.php) insert these 2 lines of code:

1 2	include_once(ABSPATH.WPINC.'/rss.php'); wp_rss('http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/48605233.rss', 3); ?>

The first line calls the Wordpress built-in RSS functions.
The second line prints your feed. The first parameter is the feed URL and the second one is the number of feed items to list.

Step 2. Go to you Twitter profile http://twitter.com/yourprofile and in the sidebar search for “RSS feed of YourUserName’s tweets”. Right click and copy the link. The link should be something like: http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/87299070.rss. The number is your Twitter Feed ID number.

Step 3. In the code above replace the URL with the URL you have copied from Twitter.

Why Have I Switched My “nofollow” to “dofollow”?

After intense debates all over the internet I still don’t get the point. Here are my questions:

What is wrong about commenting on dofollow blogs related to your topic?
What is the difference between commenting on a “dofollow” or commenting on a “nofollow”?
Why wouldn’t I get something in return for generating ON TOPIC content for the blog I read?
Why would an author think my comment is a spammy one just because his blog is “dofollow”?

And in the end, here comes the big question: What in the world is the difference between a “nofollow” blog and a “dofollow” one?

After I have turned my blog “dofollow” I hope to get all the answers.

Still, my mind is baking on this other question:
Q: Should I not buy a car because I might just crash it against walls, trees or bridges or whatever?
A: I can drive like a nut and crash just as well as I can drive with extreme prudence and avoid 97% of the crash chances. It is entirely up to me. I can even not drive my car at all… this is also an option.

This brings me to my answers to some of the questions above. I can choose if one comment gets live or not just as well as a fellow blogger can choose to spam me or not to.

Please leave a line or two with your thoughts on “dofollow” vs. “nofollow” blogging and the consequences of the choices you’ve made.

I will definitely delete/spam aggressive off topic spam comments but I will most definitely approve your comment after taking some of your precious time to add content to my site.

Hope this article answers the title question and also that you will consider the link you get as an insignificant sign of my gratitude.

New Google Adsense Interface

Finally, Adsense is changing.
I have read here: http://adsense.blogspot.com/2009/11/new-adsense-interface-now-in-beta.html, that a new interface for Adsense is in beta testing.
From what I saw, the reporting is much more powerful and I just cant wait to see if and how it turns out.

What I expect from the new adsense interface is an easier way to track each ad type (text vs image) each ad spot (without channels monitoring) and it seems to deliver.
I will keep my fingers crossed because Adsense, IMHO, really needed an update. Compared to other ad managing systems… it was something like stone age.

Add Thumbnails to the WP-Postviews Plugin

What choices do you have for listing most viewed posts?

The first one that comes to my mind is WP-Postviews plugin by Lester Chan. I am using it on many of my Wordpress powered websites, including TNT Base.

Everything works great with Lester’s plugin, it does what is supposed to, but I needed a little bit more. I wanted to show thumbnails of the most viewed posts. All those of you runing photoblogs should know what I am talking about.

So, after hours of searching and even a short talk to Lester, I have come up with my way of doing it.

Here is my solution:

Basically what we need to do is

To create a function that lists the thumbnail of a post
To integrate this function into Lesters great plugin

The function to list thumbnails of the first image in a post goes like this:

function catch_that_image() {
  global $post, $posts;

  $first_img = $matches [1] [0];
  if(empty($first_img)){ //Defines a default image
    $first_img = "/images/default.jpg";
  }
  return $first_img;
}

This must be in the functions.php file inside your theme.
Now, you can list on the home page or anywhere else in your theme the thumbnail of the image in a post by inserting

1	echo catch_that_image() ;?>" style="width:100px; height:auto;" alt="" />

In order to have this integrated with WP-Postviews plugin you must edit wp-postviews.php which is in the /wp-content/plugins/wp-postviews/ folder of your blog.
In my example we will list the thumbnails for the most viewed posts by category, but you can do it for any of the functions in the same way.
So, in the wp-postviews.php find this line
### Function: Display Most Viewed Page/Post By Category ID
Under this line there must be many $temp rows. Add the following row:

1	$temp = str_replace("%THUMBNAIL%", catch_that_image(), $temp);

At this point you have finished coding.
Now, go back to your Dashboard settings for WP-Postviews and in the Template for Most Viewed Posts by Category use the newly created “%THUMBNAIL%”.
REMEMBER: thumbnail is a link so use it like

1	<img src="%THUMBNAIL" alt="" />
